GABY IBARRA, HEAD TEACHER
Gaby Ibarra also grew up in Santa Cruz County and pursued her interest in Early Childhood Education at Cabrillo College. Gaby's teaching style is fun fun fun and students adore her enthusiasm and originality in the lessons she designs for them. This year for Heroes of History Gaby taught about traditional heroes like Wilma Rudolph--but to her student's delight she also presented complex lessons on Marval and DC heroes! Gaby taught students a bilingual song for Apple's Thanksgiving production this year and her choreography for our annual spring show included both a hip hop number and a beautiful folklorico dance! Gaby's games are a favorite at recess times and students especially love challenging her at a game of snowballs on Apple's beautiful ocean view lawn. Gaby also loves sharing her love of art with Apple students and face painting too--check out what she did for Dia de los Muertos! Gaby lives in Freedom with her fiancee (congratulations Gaby :) and two doggies. She loves camping, eating and making delicious foods, reading and an occasional Netflix Binge as well :)
Janice and Francisco Jimenez, Co-Founders of Apple Afterschool/ Magic Apple
Janice Jimenez is the co-founder of Apple Afterschool and Magic Apple School along with Fran. Janice graduated Summa Cum Laude from San Francisco State in social sciences and women's studies. She holds an Elementary Credential and taught at Amesti school before founding Magic Apple (grades 2-6) and Apple Afterschool (grades K-3). Jan loves to teach Apple students about animals, art, music and drama. Jan is also famous for cooking classes--not only do Apple students get to assist with cooking—they get to eat afterwards! Some of Jan’s most popular recipes include Apple Crisp (with Magic Apple’s just picked fruit and our incredible apple peeler corer), Jam Wraps (from won ton wrappers), quesadillas, and even puddle cake. Jan is also proud of the many community service projects students at Apple Afterschool have undertaken over many years. Most recently,Apple kids raised funds to buy mobile showers for the local homeless community as well as assisting with purchasing supplies for Families in Transition through donating 100% of their performance admission fees.
Francisco Jimenez is also a co-founder of both schools--hence the student nickname for both "Jan and Fran". Francisco holds a BA and an MA and was a PVUSD administrator before founding Apple and Magic Apple. Fran is especially gifted and appreciated by students at both schools for his colorful stories of his life as a migrant child. He also has a counseling credential which comes in handy during his large group classes when Fran takes on any issues student's want to discuss. Fran has brought meditation to both Apple and Magic Apple students and it is always an incredible sight to see 50+ students on stage in perfect silence before beginning our annual spring performance. Fran is also much beloved for his enthusiasm, energy and creativity in presenting Science Lessons. Dressed in a wizard hat and white lab coat Fran is always ready--from changing molecules of a rose or hot dog to explosions with mentos and cokes--learning is fun with Fran!
