2019-2020 APPLE AFTERSCHOOL UNITS OF STUDY
August 15th- September 13th- All About Me
We’ll learn our new friends, teachers, and careers (thank you parents) as we begin the new school year. We will also work together to discuss and develop a list of classroom and behavioral expectations for the year as well. Students will play cooperative learning games outdoors, and enjoy working together during skits and cooking lessons. Our Dramatic Play Areas will be transformed into Apple City, featuring a Hotel, Restaurant, Hair Salon and Doctor/Vet.
September 16th-October 11th- Latino/a History Month
Our theme will focus on the wonderful culture and people of Latin America. We will learn about famous Latin heroes, create Ojos de Dios, learn Folkloric dance moves and how to make tortillas with our own press. Apple City will continue to enable students to try working at different jobs as we hear from parents about their careers.
October 14th-October 31st- Mysteries
Students will study famous mysteries (Stonehenge, Nessie/ Loch Ness, Easter Island, etc.) enjoy science experiments with mysterious results and enjoy books featuring kid detectives (Halloween mysteries will be sure to fit in as well). Our Dramatic Play area will transform into a Police Station, Detective/Private Eye Office and a costume/disguise shop. We will also enlist the help of our own private detectives in solving classroom mix-upsJ
November-Aviation and Adopt an Animal Month
Lessons will feature Amelia Earhart and famous pilots, the science of flight, and even making paper aircraft. We will also learn about the important work of animal shelters and rescues as our students get to adopt and learn to care for a new pet. Dramatic Play will feature an Airport, Airplane and Animal Shelter for our versatile workersJ
December- Art Month
Lessons will center on famous Artists and their works. We will also study holiday art and students will be able to create their own works of art to adorn our dramatic play areas: An art gallery, and artist studio and toy factory.
January- Flowers, Rocks and Gemstones
Our popular study of rocks and gems returns as students study different types of rocks and minerals and how they were formed. We will also go rock hunting, create pet rocks, weigh measure and graph rocks, and even cook up an edible earth with layers. We will also explore plants in our Dramatic Play areas with our own Geology/Botany lab.
February- Black History Month
This month’s focus will be on heroes of the civil rights movement (Ruby Bridges, Martin Luther King, the Little Rock 9, Rosa Parks, etc.). Students will also enjoy some enriching multicultural activities with music, outdoor games, and exciting art projects. Our Dramatic Play areas will coincide with Valentine’s Day where students will work at Apple’s Post Office, Flower, and Candy/Card shop. Postal workers will even deliver cards to our secret pal
March- Women’s History
We will study famous women in history (Wilma Rudolph, JK Rowling, Susan Butcher (won the Iditarod, etc.), and how their work impacted the world for women. We will also enjoy a birthday party for Cesar Chavez with a party and learn about peaceful ways change has been made in the world. Our Dramatic play area will emphasize science and tech jobs with a lab, job safety security area and HR office –girls (and boys) encouraged to apply!
April- Zoo and Aquarium
We will learn about a variety of wild and aquatic life and the special adaptations enabling survival. Students will also learn about the Irwin Family and Jacques Costeau’s work to protect animals and the seas. Our Dramatic Play area will enable students to experience working at the Apple Zoo, Aquarium and a wild animal veterinary office.
May- June California History Month
It’s time to celebrate our own state as we learn about our flower, animal flag, etc. Students will then create their own canvas flags in art, cook up some delicious California cuisine and learn about special times in our state’s history, and enjoy acting in a Reader’s Theater about the California Gold rush. Our Dramatic play areas will allow students to experience life on a farm, pan for gold and shop at our own farmer’s market.
